Glass-Front Garage Sauna

The details

A sauna that stands in your garage

This is a freestanding indoor sauna we built in a residential garage, standing on the speckled garage floor. The shell is vertical boards painted a soft greige, with a flat top.

Almost the whole front is glass — a large fixed pane beside a frameless glass door on chrome hinges, with long round wooden bar handles on both sides. A white switch plate sits on the shell next to the door.

Inside the cabin

The walls are lined with pale, knotty tongue-and-groove boards run vertically, the same boards cover the ceiling, and wooden boards make up the floor. Two tiers of slatted benches run along the back wall. In the front corner, right behind the glass, a black electric heater with an open stone tray on top sits inside a wooden guard boxed around its top, with its two control dials at the base. A round thermometer hangs on the wall above it. With the front glazed, daylight from the garage reaches the whole cabin.
