Shed-Roof Sauna with Side Alcove

The details

A sauna for the terrace

This build stands on a stone-tiled terrace against the house wall. The outside walls are pale knotty boards run horizontally and left natural. A wide, dark-tinted window sits high in the front wall, and a black corrugated shed roof carries past the side wall to cover an open alcove with a wood-lined soffit.

The alcove has a slatted wood floor with a floor drain set into it. From the alcove you step into the sauna through a dark-tinted glass door with a round wooden bar handle.

Inside the hot room

Knotty tongue-and-groove boards run vertically on the walls, and the same boards line the ceiling. The benches sit in two tiers — an upper bench along one wall and a lower bench across the room. An electric heater with a stone basket sits low beside the lower bench, its dial controls on the front. A round thermometer hangs on the wall, and a wooden bucket and ladle sit on the upper bench. From inside, the window frames the palms and the water beyond the terrace.
